We are Evergreen for a reason.
Here, we believe that each of us has a sacred responsibility to take care of our natural environment. Our children’s future depends on it. Environmental education is intertwined with the Montessori curriculum daily. Just as students learn to care for the materials in the classroom, they plant in the rain garden, recycle, compost and repurpose art materials.
With the help of parents, teachers and the greater community, Evergreen transformed its playground into a sustainable rain garden. The new landscaping and native plants prevent rainwater from flowing directly into the storm water system and the Anacostia Watershed. Runoff is channeled from the school’s parking lot through a filtration swale and basin. The garden won a top environmental prize in the Keep Montgomery County Beautiful Contest by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation.
