Esteemed Elders' Day

Over 75 grandparents and special friends celebrated Esteemed Elders’ Day at Evergreen on March 15.  The Grandparent Day tradition goes back to a least 1984. The program started with a reception hosted by the Evergreen Parents’ Association (ESPA) and coordinated by Evergreen parent Mr. Shonket Chakrabarti.  ESPA President, Mrs. Laura Libanati was on hand to orient visitors and share her many years of experience as a Montessori mom.

During Mr. DeMarchi’s opening remarks, we learned that visitors came from as far away as Dubai and The Philippines. Mr. DeMarchi spoke about the important lessons that grandparents and elders can teach to the young.  Then special guest, former Evergreen parent and trustee Larry Ott spoke.  Mr. Ott talked about his Evergreen experiences and what it meant to him and his daughter.  The international character of Evergreen and its intimate setting were important aspects of the school’s culture.  His daughter, Maria is an Evergreen alumna and lawyer in Frankfurt, Germany. According to Mr. Ott, Maria still cherishes her early years at the school.

Ms. Caitlin Garry led each class in a musical performance.  Songs came from her music class curriculum and included a selection of American folk songs including Shoe Fly, Alabama Gal, and Bobolinka.

The day concluded with classroom visits and a series of craft projects in the Social Hall.  Visitors left with picture frames, foam sculptures and necklaces—but most important, they left with warm memories of time with their little loved ones.
