Winter Enrichment

The second session of after school enrichment has started!

We are offering the following exciting and educational classes and programs to compliment our aftercare program:

Science Club!

Why doesn’t the ocean freeze? Does mint actually cool things down? What objects form the best crystals? Answer these questions and more in the Science Club, led by E-day staff person, Bianca Alvarez-Grande! We will discover how to make and create cool things such as Oobleck, ice cream from scratch, exploding volcanoes, play dough, home-made lava lamps, and much more. Science Club kids will be so excited to show their parents all the cool new things they can make! Projects will be made age appropriate for each group. (7 lessons)

Fangs, Frogs & More!

This interactive class, led by Dorsey’s Fangs, Frogs and More, involves animal science, geography and the environment in a safe and fun format. Children will learn about life cycles and experience an array of live animals such as snakes, lizards, spiders, toads, centipedes and more.  (8 lessons)

Sweet & Savory Pies

Who can resist warm, flaky pastry, fresh from the oven? It doesn’t matter if it is bursting with sweet, fruity, creamy deliciousness or flavorful, savory goodness, either way you just want to dive in! Students will learn techniques to create the classic pastry dough needed for such staples as Pies, Tarts and Quiche, plus the delicious fillings to go inside them. They will also work with puff pastry, pizza dough and phylo as we explore recipes for such as Homemade Pop Tarts, Pizza Pie, Turnovers, Spanakopita, Pot Pies, Pie Pops and Empanadas…if there is pastry on it, under it or around it, we will probably be making it in this very tasty pastry class. Picture This!

Children see the world through a special lens. There is a purity to their imagination that at some point most adults lose. If you have ever put a camera in the hands of a child you will soon discover that what they see in life is very different than the adult’s perspective. Come join me, Janee Sturdivant, as we learn the fundamentals of photography. They’ll learn the basics of using a camera, the importance of color and lighting. We’ll also go out and shoot a few pictures of our own. At the end of the class, they’ll each create a big collage of their pictures based on how they see the world through their lens. If you have a little digital camera of your own, they are more than welcome to bring them to class!

Schoolhouse Rocks!

Music not only helps children learn about rhythm and motor skills, but also helps them with language and literacy skills. Music captures the attention of young children and has much value that teaches students many skills necessary for well-rounded development. They will learn and practice reading skills, recognizing rhyming words, and fluency through repeated readings using music.  Join me, Janee Sturdivant, as we use music and movement to create songs to help develop our literacy and language skills. At the end of the class, we will create our own song book of all the different subjects and words we’ve learned. We are going to sing our hearts out and entertain everyone within earshot! (5 lessons)
