Teacher Spotlight: Roxana Berrios, Primary Assistant Teacher

I grew up in El Salvador. I realized that I wanted to be a teacher when a began to volunteer at my daughter's preschool.  When working as a volunteer, I discovered that I loved working with children. My favorite part about Evergreen School is the community support and the teamwork among staff members. I have been married to my husband for 35 years.  We have three adult children: one daughter and two sons. My hobbies are sewing, cooking and taking walks with our family dog.  I enjoy spending...

Where are you from and where did you grow up? I'm originally from Durham, NC, where I attended a Montessori school and lived there until I went to college. I have also lived in Wellesley, MA, New York, NY, and Chapel Hill, NC. I have lived in Silver Spring since 2005. How long have you been a teacher? How long have you been at Evergreen? Teacher Spotlight: Caitlin Garry, Music Teacher and Librarian

I was born in San Francisco, CA but moved at 3 weeks old to Nashville, TN because my father (who was in the Navy) was transferred there. I moved to MD when I was 7 and have lived here (apart from four and a half years in PA during college) ever since. I knew from the time I was ten years old that I wanted to be a music teacher. I idolized Ms. Frylink, who was my music teacher during my fifth and sixth grade years. I love that I grew up to do exactly what I always knew I wanted to do… and the...

Teacher Spotlight: Trish Hannon, Elementary Co-lead Teacher

I am from New Jersey. I grew up in a town close to Philadelphia, and spent most of my summers at the Jersey shore.  When did you realize you wanted to be a teacher and work in education? I was a System Analyst for a large company. My customer was The Center for Military History. I had to design a computer interface to help older Army generals update their artifact card catalogs. I loved teaching them, and helping them feel accomplished. I realized that helping other people learn new skills was...

Teacher Spotlight: Luda Grant, Primary Lead Teacher

I was born and grew up in a small town in Belarus, the country in Eastern Europe.  I realized I wanted to be a teacher in grade school. I admired my English teacher who instilled love for the English language.  I also remember "playing school" with my younger sister as a child. I find Evergreen to be a great community of friendly and supportive colleagues. The Head of School is always looking for ways to make the school a better place. The small class sizes allow me to spend more quality time...

Faculty Spotlight: Thes Perrin, Primary Lead Teacher

I grew up in Manila, Philippines.  I moved to Maryland fifteen years ago, and my family has lived here ever since. It is gratifying to witness and experience Maria Montessori’s philosophy and pedagogy come to life each day.  It’s a great pleasure to see the children grow holistically before my eyes and share a love for learning.  A love that I hope is strong enough that will remain with them for a lifetime.  It is also amazing to see alumni visit Evergreen and hear their inspiring adventures. I...

The Rubens Ott Music and Peace Garden

The Rubens Ott Music and Peace Garden is given in the memory of Rubens Ott, a former Evergreen student. During his years at Evergreen, Rubens nurtured his love of learning, reading and math in particular. He also loved the outdoor playground, and spent many happy moments there with his friends. We are grateful for the generous support of the Ott Family and Beatrice Ukraincik to the Pine Cone Park project.
