Teacher Spotlight
Amilcar Hernandez: Holly Room Assistant

I was born in Providence, Rhode Island. I lived in Boston, MA for a few years. I eventually lived in Guatemala for two years. In 2004, I ended up moving back to the U.S. and lived in Silver Spring, Maryland ever since.

When did you realize you wanted to be a teacher and work in education?
Towards the end of High school, I have always wanted to be a math teacher after taking child development courses. It granted me the opportunity and interest to work with kids. Eventually, my interest changed when I went to college. I pursued a degree in the business field. Over the summer, there was an opportunity at Evergreen in which made me fall in love again in working with kids. Ever since, my interest and love to work with kids has grown!

What are your favorite things about Evergreen and why do you like working here?
Having worked over the summer at Evergreen, I instantly fell in love with the caring and supportive environment. It’s pretty fun getting to know every individual and how they are all unique in their own way! The students have surprised me and taught me new things that I didn’t even know! I am truly amazed at how their little brains are packed with so much knowledge!

Tell us about your family.
My mother (which you are all probably familiar with Blanca Hernandez) and biological father are from Guatemala. My mother moved to the U.S. in the ’90s. My step-father is from El Salvador but has lived in the U.S. ever since the early ’90s. I have three siblings. I am the oldest in the bunch. I have a sister who is 21, another sister who is 15, and the youngest and favorite child, my brother who is 13.

What are your hobbies?
I love to explore the DMV area! Finding new coffee shops (which I LOVE), new restaurants, new hangout spots, and so forth! I am very much into art! I love to draw and take pictures. Lastly, I love to thrift! Finding vintage clothing or clothing to alter is my favorite thing to do.
