Celebrating Our Music Program

There isn’t a civilization in the world that doesn’t have its own musical tradition.  Why? According to Howard Sacks, physician, neurology professor at NYU and author of Musicophilia: Music can move us to the heights or depths of emotion. It can persuade us to buy something, or remind us of our first date. It can lift us out of depression when nothing else can. It can get us dancing to its beat. But the power of music goes much, much further. Indeed, music occupies more areas of our brain than...

The ABC's of Outdoor Play

Why is play so important?  According to Marc Armitage, a British Playworker (more on that in a moment), play is natural, essential, spontaneous, environmentally-based and intrinsically motivating.  To a Montessorian’s ears, those are the characteristics of learning, too.  At Evergreen, we describe what happens in our classrooms the same way.  Work, play, learning and being are synonymous because each is a natural and essential aspect of life itself.

Over 75 grandparents and special friends celebrated Esteemed Elders’ Day at Evergreen on March 15.  The Grandparent Day tradition goes back to a least 1984. Welcome Mrs. Sesko

Nothing is more important at Evergreen than the quality of our faculty.  Our teachers make Evergreen great.  It is their experience  expertise, wisdom, love, patience and passion for teaching that define the excellence of our school. For this reason, I am pleased to introduce Mrs. Sheri Sesko. On With the Show

Students enjoyed the recent performance of “If Pigs Could Fly” by the Blue Sky Puppet Theater.  Blue Sky was founded in 1974 by Michael Kotter and is one of the premier puppet theaters on the East Coast.  Based in College Park, Maryland, they perform over 1000 shows each year. Our children loved the dramatization of five folk tales from around the world.  After the performance, each child was able to meet and touch a puppet. The performance was sponsored by ESPA, the Evergreen School Parents’...

Evergreen on a Roll

The Evergreen bus is always ready to roll.  This week Mrs. John’s class went to Glen Echo Park to see The Puppet Co.’s performance of Toyland.  The Toddler class rode the bus to Imagination Stage to see Wake Up Brother Bear.  Exploring the world is a natural part of the Evergreen curriculum.  With so many resources in the DC Metro Area, learning happens everywhere. You can see a clip of the Imagination Stage Performance here.

Evergreen welcomed MJ and Jerry Park from Little Friends for Peace today.  The Parks led an energetic assembly to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King and his work promoting peace. During the assemblies, children sang about conflict resolution, rode a Peace Train and learned how peace starts inside us all.  Mrs. Park even brought the “gift of peace”  and children saw their own reflection inside the gift.

Reading Snowmen: Our January Bulletin Board

Cheers to Cora Michael and our wonderful new bulletin board.  Our Primary hallway is bright and cheery– perfect for these cold and rainy Washington winter days. Cora’s creations are more than just about color and form.  They highlight textures, 3-D materials and mixed media.  Yes, those are real scarves! And the marshmallows are styrofoam peanuts!
