Checking Out in the Library

“When I got [my] library card, that was when my life began.”

― Rita Mae Brown

The Evergreen library is the place where our children go to explore, discover and dream.  With 3,041 books in our collection, there are nearly endless shelves of books to read, adventures to lead, ideas to consider and facts to learn.  The library is the beloved cornerstone of our literacy program.  It’s the first place children go to discover the joy and the power of the written word (and see beautiful illustrations!)

Our library took a dramatic leap into the modern age this fall as the entire collection was cataloged using an all-new circulation system.  While the cataloging was time consuming, we now know precisely what is in our collection.  And with the bar-code system, checking books in and out is a breeze. Best of all, each student has been issued his or her own library card.  For many children, like best-selling author of Rubyfruit Jungle, Rita Mae Brown, having a library card is akin to having a passport to learning.

Librarian Caitlin Garry says, “with all of the new improvements to the library, it has become even easier for every child to find and check out the perfect book.  I love seeing my students get excited about reading.”  And with so many books to choose, there is something for everyone.  Interested in trains? We’ve got something for you.  Ships?  Insects?  Dinosaurs? Beginning reader? Advanced reader?  Ms. Tobin added, “I wish my school had a library like this when I was little.”

With our new circulating system, students in the Elementary class can now check our three books at a time.  Academic Afternoon students can check out two. Even the Toddlers visit the library each week to check out a book at a time.  We added 100 feet of additional bookshelf space to complete the original design concept.
