Specials and Outdoors

All children are artists, musicians, athletes, readers, dancers, and more.

Evergreen is comprehensive. Special classes enhance Montessori learning and take place every day.  These classes develop each dimension of every child’s full ability.

Music

Students experience the joy of making music at Evergreen.  Our program nurtures each child’s innate love of music.  The dedicated music room is a place to sing and dance to all types of music.  Performance is an essential part of music. Students showcase their learning at annual festivals and special events.

Pine Cone Park and Rock Crest Park

We are Evergreen for a reason. Children spend 45 minutes each day engaging in creative free-play outdoors.  On the Silver Spring campus, we offer our award-winning playground named Pine Cone Park. In Rockville, we are located a short distance from Rock Crest Park. These all natural environments provide opportunities for imaginative play, construction, sports and games, climbing, swinging, sand-play, and more.  School gardens are tended by our teachers and children and includes a variety of vegetables and herbs.

Art

Art has a natural place in a child's education. Art is an expresssion of thought, problem solving and imagination-- as well as motor control. Looking at and talking about art builds language skills, advances critical thinking, and improves visualization that's fundamental to reading, too.

Physical Education & Movement

Children develop their strength, balance, flexibility, coordination and agility in our Movement Program.  Our curriculum aligns with each child’s developmental needs at each stage of growth. In addition, the program provides students with the skills necessary for a lifetime of fitness.

Spanish

The Spanish program builds a strong foundation of  language skills and cultural knowledge.  Children four years and up participate in small group Spanish lessons twice each week. Small groups enable bilingual students to have individualized lessons.

Library

Our library is a sanctuary for reading. With more than 2,300 books to choose from, the library’s foremost purpose is to foster a love of books. The library collection holds a huge selection of up-to-date picture books, early readers, chapter books, reference titles and more.

All children visit the library weekly for read alouds, browsing and checking out books.

Field Tripsfield trip bus

Field trips are essential extensions of classroom learning. At museums, parks, concert halls and more, children explore the world as environmentalists, art historians, astronauts, pilots, trolley drivers, and more. Transportation is provided in Evergreen’s bus. Seats are equipped with child's 5-point safety harnesses.

Recent field trips include:

  • The Kennedy Center
  • National Gallery of Art
  • Butler’s Orchard
  • Roundhouse Theater
  • Imagination Stage
  • The Building Museum
  • Camp Calleva
  • College Park Aviation Museum
